As his army retreated\, Chiang ordered a full evacuation of all residents from these islands. In total\, 18\,000 local fishermen and their families were forcibly relocated to Taiwan. The removal operation was carried out jointly by the US Seventh Fleet and the Nationalist navy. To this day\, research on the First Strait Crisis has focused on Cold War international politics and nuclear brinkmanship surrounding the offshore islands. Little attention is paid to the tens of thousands of people who were displaced in the process. The Nationalist propaganda lauded the Dachen islanders as “righteous compatriots” (yibao 義胞)\, people who possessed remarkable anti-communist spirit. These islanders flatly refused to live under the Chinese Communist tyranny\, so they abandoned their homes\, burned their boats\, and followed the Nationalist army to “Free China” that is Taiwan. \nBut is that the true story? Who were these Dachen people? How were their lives affected by the Cold War and the unfinished Chinese Civil War? What happened after they got to Taiwan? Based on newly declassified archival documents and oral history\, I present a very different picture from the one offered by the official Nationalist history. Political refugees\, people “who vote with their feet\,” were an integral part of Cold War ideological struggle and propaganda war. They continue to be part of the battle for the hearts and minds in today’s conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. This talk peels back the politically-drive state narratives and uncovers the Dachen lived experiences—ordinary people struggling for livelihood\, agency\, community\, and identity in war and displacement. Refugee studies should be more than about practical policy to solve “the refugee problem.” It should be about the refugees themselves. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

I argue that queer homecoming\, as intervention\, enables the articulation of alternative kinship structures in mainstream cultural expressions to destabilize the myth of consanguinity among Sinophone communities in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Taiwan\, and Asian America. By rethinking the implications of concepts such as the familiar and the familial\, I explore how queer identities and queerness challenge the dominant discourse of heteronormative kinship and its marginalization of minority groups in non-rights-based societies. To illustrate how queer subjects navigate and negotiate a livable space within the institution of family and the nation state\, I introduce two activist movements––Pink Dot Singapore and Taiwan Same-Sex Wedding Banquet (同婚宴–辦/伴桌). Through an examination of campaign videos for these initiatives circulated on social media platforms such as YouTube\, Facebook\, and Line TV\, I contend that queer activism in these two locales adopts the narrative of kinship as a strategic approach to initiating dialogues with both the public and the state in order to advocate for LGBTQ rights. \nE.K. Tan is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies in the departments of English and Asian & Asian American Studies\, and a current resident fellow at the National Humanities Institute in North Carolina. He is the author of Rethinking Chineseness: Translational Sinophone Identities in the Nanyang Literary World. His essays have appeared in publications such as Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies\, Prism: Theory and Modern Chinese Literature\, Sun Yat-Sen Journal of Humanities\, and Journal of Chinese Cinemas. At present\, he is working on two projects tentatively titled “Queer Homecoming: Translocal Remapping of Sinophone Kinship” and “Mandarinization and Its Impact on Sinophone Cultural Production: A Transcolonial Comparison of Ethnic China\, Singapore and Taiwan.” He also serves as Chair for the Society of Sinophone Studies (2022–2025) and Conference Committee Chair for the American Comparative Literature Association (2021–2024). \n  \n

While this brought immense growth potential for these societies\, this period of history also witnessed loss of manufacturing jobs\, stagnating wages\, growing inequality\, out of control housing costs\, and the introduction of foreign guest worker programs in both places. The purpose of this project is to understand how the gravitational shift in global capitalism effected by China’s rise has remade the social and political contours of its immediate periphery. Focusing on Hong Kong and Taiwan\, my research asks: how did deeper economic integration with China impact employment and class structures in each place\, and to what political effect? I employ a transnational and comparative perspective to understand how capital\, workers\, unions\, social movements\, and political parties in Hong Kong and Taiwan responded to economic changes in the wake of China’s rise\, and how they articulated a political response. By delineating three distinct historical phases in the relationship with Mainland China\, I show how market integration ushered in a brief blossoming of PRC-centric hegemony across Sinophone Asia in the 2000s\, only to be undermined by the social revolt of downwardly mobile youth in the mid-2010s. While most analyses of China’s increasingly coercive approach to Hong Kong and Taiwan focus on the proclivities of Xi Jinping or geopolitical tensions with the West\, I point to how market-based integration undermined the social basis of hegemonic rule. Thus\, I contend that we need to understand how China’s economic rise impacted workers in Taiwan and Hong Kong to explain how Beijing’s efforts to peacefully integrate the imperial periphery went from boom to bust in less than a generation. \n\nEli Friedman is an Associate Professor of Global Labor and Work at Cornell University’s ILR School.
