Queer Global Asias EventVernacularized Values: Shifting Economies of Trans-Kothi-Hijra Labor in India

(Co-host with UCSB the Center for Feminist Futures)

Since the 2010s, transgender people have become constructed as subjects of both legal rights and economic empowerment in India. However, for the trans feminine spectrum of kothi and hijra people in eastern India, the promise of economic mainstreaming has often remained unrealized or resulted in precarious or irregular employment, even as older professions such as blessing people for money or dancing at weddings face increasing challenges. In this context, this talk will build on Ani’s book Globalizing through the Vernacular: Kothis, Hijras, and the Making of Queer and Trans Identities in India (Bloomsbury, 2024) to explore how its analytic of vernacularization might help us understand changing economies of trans labor.

Queer Global Asias Event – A Speculative Methodology Workshop

(Co-host with UCSB the Center for Feminist Futures)

Blending archival work, ethnography, and cultural analysis with memoir, graphic arts, and science fiction, Queer Chimerica unpacks the ways in which the transnational circulation of queer culture, politics, and institutions are structured through the antagonist interdependence of China and the United States. By examining the intersecting timelines of the rise of queer theory and the rise of China in the late Cold War era, Dr. Shana Ye explores the relationship between the discourse of queer fluidity and capital’s demands for labor flexibility.
